Call For Collaborating Host Sites

FAQ

Machine Learning Institute

September 4-7, 2018

Do you have a big data machine learning problem that would benefit from using a large scale computing system?

Do you want to learn more about Machine Learning?

We are now seeking applications from sites wishing to be collaborating hosts for this institute.

Further information about becoming a collaborating host site may be found within the "Call for Collaborating Host Sites" menu bar to the left.

Registration for participants will open for the “Machine Learning Institute” once the collaborating host sites are confirmed.

This institute is intended for people seeking to enhance their machine learning knowledge and skills with an emphasis on analyzing large data collections.  Participants are expected to have familiarity with Linux, Python and multivariate calculus. There will be hands-on activities throughout the event.

The participants will learn about the tools, techniques and resources available for mapping a neural net for large scale data analysis.

The institute will address the following topics:

  • Overview of machine learning
  • Techniques for analyzing a variety of data types
  • K-means,  Singular-Value Decomposition (SVD) and Regression techniques
  • Case studies using a variety of data sets
  • Unsupervised and supervised methods

To best serve the attendees, we are seeking input from people interested in attending, so that we can adjust the sessions to best meet attendee needs. If you are interested in attending, please send us the following information:

  • What do you want to learn about machine learning?
  • Do you have an existing data set to work with?  If so, please describe the type of data you want to analyze, and the overall size of the data set(s).
  • Briefly describe your mathematics/statistics background?  To what extent are you familiar with multivariate calculus, regression, matrix factorization?
  • Briefly describe your  HPC experience?

Please email questions to bw-eot@ncsa.illinois.edu.

The institute is led by

  • Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Illinois
  • Blue Waters at NCSA at the University of Illinois
  • Consulting for Statistics, Computing and Analytics Research (CSCAR) at the University of Michigan
