We have developed novel multiscale finite element methods that are integrated with viscoelastic constitutive models for blood to simulate and analyze clot formation and dissolution in patient specific geometries. The current Blue Waters project aims to achieve two objectives: (i) Exploit the mathematical constructs of our variational multiscale method on Blue Waters hardware architecture. Our hierarchical multiscale approach reduces the size of the global problem, while increasing “local-solves” that are cost effective due to resident memory on processing node, and (ii) Extract flow physics in patient specific models via high fidelity blood flow simulations.
