Document and Presentation Guidelines for:
NCSA Blue Waters Symposium
for Petascale Science and Beyond
May 12-15, 2014
This event will bring together leaders in scientific and computational research at the petascale level and will be a tremendous opportunity for showcasing the work and results enabled by Blue Waters. We therefore ask that you send a 150-word summary addressing the activities and findings related to your Blue Waters project by March 31. This summary will be posted publicly on the symposium website.
We also plan to produce a book featuring the work of the science and engineering teams running on Blue Waters. For this publication we ask for an extended abstract, following the guidelines provided below, to be sent to NCSA by April 15, 2014.
Presentation Submissions
- Due Monday, May 5, 2014
- Upload PowerPoint (or PDF) files directly to: https://bluewaters.ncsa.illinois.edu/sym-may-2014-presentations-uploads. (You will need to log into the portal using your Blue Waters account.)
- The presentation laptops provided by the conference center will run Windows 7 and Office 2010
Presentation Guidelines
PI's, or desingated presenters will be provided with a specific time and duration for his/her presentation. Presentations will 20 minutes. This time includes time for Q&A.
Presentations should cover:
o Key Challenges: description of the science/engineering problem being addressed
o Why it Matters: description of the potential impact of solving this research problem
o Why Blue Waters: explanation of why you need the unique scale and attributes of Blue Waters to address these challenges
o Accomplishments: explanation of results you obtained

Extended Abstract Submission Guidelines
Each team using the Blue Waters system is invited to submit an extended abstract detailing their research results. These abstracts will be collected and published soon after the annual symposium. The collection will be distributed to all Blue Waters users, to the National Science Foundation and other funding agencies, to university leaders, and to others in the computational science community.
Each text submission must include:
Name and institution of principal investigator
Names and affiliations of collaborators
Executive summary (150 words)
Description of research activities and results (approx. 800-1,200 words). This must include:
o Key Challenges: description of the science/engineering problem being addressed
o Why it Matters: description of the potential impact of solving this research problem
o Why Blue Waters: explanation of why you need the unique scale and attributes of Blue Waters to address these challenges
o Accomplishments: explanation of results you obtained
