Exploratory simulations are proposed as part of our research studying the noise from high-specific thrust jet exhausts, such as on military jets. This noise, known as crackle, is often more intense, exhibiting a distinctive rasping fricative sound that is harsher than a typical civilian transport. We employ large-scale simulations to study the nonlinear turbulence interactions that generate these peculiar sound features. Blue Waters provides the opportunity to simulate more realistic flow Reynolds numbers and to analyze the entire space-time database without compromising of space-time resolution. Results of this work will advance scientific understanding of mechanisms and guide engineering mitigation of crackle.
