Using Blue Waters we plan to tackle several large-scale, long-standing, unsolved problems in theoretical astrophysics and numerical relativity. We will perform fully general relativistic, (radiation) magneto-hydrodynamic simulations in order to model with unprecedented physical realism the merger of compact binary systems, including binary black holes in gaseous disks and the merger of binary black hole–neutron stars. The ultimate goal is to predict and correlate the observable gravitational wave and electromagnetic signatures of these events, as well as to identify the elusive engine that powers the mysterious short gamma ray bursts.
