The field of computer architecture, interconnection networks and system design is undergoing rapid change enabling very large supercomputers such as Blue Waters to be built. System advances have come in the form of increased parallelism from many-core accelerators and improved communication interfaces. To leverage these advances, applications must be revamped to use new capabilities of the interconnection networks and more sophisticated programming models. In this project we are enhancing a set of applications with more sophisticated communication and work distribution mechanisms utilizing advanced features of the Gemini interconnect and hybrid MPI/CUDA and MPI/PGAS programming models.
