Our recently developed next-generation symmetry-adapted no-core shell model (SA-NCSM), which builds on first principles and symmetries of nuclear dynamics, targets ab initio descriptions of intermediate-mass nuclei, including short-lived nuclei not yet accessible to experiment but key to understanding astrophysical processes. While the implementation of the SA-NCSM for massively parallel computer systems achieves good load-balancing and scales beyond tens of thousands of processors, its computational complexity requires the Blue Waters petascale resources. This makes the SA-NCSM code ideal for runs on the Blue Waters system, while addressing long-standing challenges of importance to nuclear theory and experiment, as well as to astrophysics.
