The goal of this team is to test hypotheses about the Earth system at ultra-high resolutions by combining unprecedented computing power with highly scalable climate system components currently under development in related programs. In particular, the team plans to test two important hypotheses about the climate systems:

  • The large errors in current-generation climate models are associated with fundamentally flawed assumptions in the parameterizations of cloud processes and ocean eddy mixing processes.
  • Climate predictability, which is a synthetic quality entirely associated with a given model, increases with increasing model resolution by virtue of the changing representation of atmospheric and oceanic noise
