Adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) has played an indispensable role in numerical simulations. However, compared with uniform-mesh approaches, it remains extremely challenging for AMR simulations to fully exploit the petascale computing power in modern supercomputers. Here we propose to use GAMER, a highly optimized GPU-accelerated octree AMR code, on Blue Waters to conduct a comprehensive study of this challenge and perform several cutting-edge astrophysical simulations.
